Let's get your boots sizing spot on! 

🚩 FIRST stand your dog on a blank sheet of paper.

  1. TRACE A LINE ON EITHER SIDE of one front paw and then repeat for one back paw - with your dog bearing weight on the paws.
  2. DO EACH PAW 3 TIMES TO ASSURE ACCURACY. Dogs are wiggly. That's not a bad thing... except when measuring paws!
  3. MEASURE in mm  the distance between the traced lines for the width of the front paws and then for the back paws. Get your final width measurement for a front paw and a back paw by taking an average of your front paw widths and your back paw widths.
  4. CHECK THE PAW WIDTH COLUMN on the chart below to determine what size boots are required for the front & back paws. Do NOT add any extra padding for - anything... not even for the Boot Liners. That is ALL figured in.

Ruffwear bases their size chart solely on the paw width measurement. I've been selling these boots long enough to know that occasionally a couple of other measurements come in handy. I am more than happy to exchange your boots (or refund) provided the boots are still in new condition. BUT to make things easiest for you it's best we nail the size the first time. So....

  • IF YOUR DOG HAS CHUNKY PAWS:
    Paws will appear almost square in shape (... Labs, Great Danes, etc). Do a paw circumference to be sure the boot mouth will be big enough for the paw to enter. Wrap a measuring tape around your dog's paw from top to bottom to top (see picture below). When ordering boots be sure your final measurement is less than or equal to the Max Paw Circumference I've provided to be sure the paws can enter the boots. If not go up a size.
  • For dogs with long paws:
    If your dog has particularly long paws (Whippets, Greyhounds and other long pawed beauties) do a paw length measurement. Check your numbers to be sure the paws lengths are not longer than the Boot Length Measurement provided. Otherwise you may need to go up a size.
