Getting the right fit is really essential
To ensure a proper fit (and to ensure the boots stay on) it is important to measure your dog's paws. Don't assume paw size is based on your dog's overall size...make sure to measure using our easy directions below.
Measuring Paw Width
1) Have your dog stand on a firm surface (wood, linoleum, or concrete).
2) Place a piece of blank paper under a front paw.
3) Lift the dog's other front paw so that its weight is placed firmly on the paw being measured.
4) Mark the paper at the paw's widest point on the left and right edges of the paw (see graphic on size chart).
5) Use a ruler to measure the distance from the left mark to the right mark on the paper.
6) Use the Size Chart tab to determine the proper size. For example: if the width is measured between 57-64 mm, the dog would wear a small boot; between 70-76 mm, a large.
Your Choice of 4 Boots or 2 Boots
Your best bet is to measure 1 front paw and 1 back paw as sometimes the front paws can be a larger size than the back paws.
Trying Out Your New Boots
When you receive your new boots please be sure to give them a good solid go on your dog INSIDE before going outside. We want your dog to be comfy! We are more than happy to refund or exchange items as long as they have not been worn outside and are still in NEW condition. No questions asked!
For best results when trying out new boots pop the boots onto your dog and launch right into an activity your dog loves. Generally this includes toys or treats. Reward your dog for good work done and do not be surprised to see your dog walking as if he or she is on the moon. Most dogs adjust to boots in no time. You might want to have your video camera out for the initial trials as it can be quite entertaining to watch.
Will The Boots Fall Off?
If you get the right measurements your new boots should stay without any issues. The boots are most likely to fall off when your dog is first wearing them as they tend to walk a bit wildly. For this reason and for sizing purposes it's important to give them a go inside the house first. Whe you do try them out outside the first couple of times you might want to keep an eye on your canine adventurer. As your dog adjusts to the boots they are much less likely to pop off.
Should you get the Boot Liners too?
This is a question I am asked often. I think the Ruffwear Boot Liners add a lot of value at little expense. Getting the liners on your dog's paws is easy. Once you've got the liners on you can slip the boots on much easier. With all the paw digits confined nicely it's smooth sailing. They also do the job of wicking away moisture from the paw. Dogs do sweat from the paw. It's actually one of the only places a dog perspires. The liners will reduce friction on the paws just like socks do for us. Both the liners & boots can be thrown into the washing machine and will dry pretty quickly so you should be good with a set of each.
